You can purchase a modified sim device which mimics the information required from the phone and original sim chip. This allows your phone to believe it still has the locked carriers sim inserted. To achieve this you simply line up your sim card with the modified sim card and insert it in to your phone. Walla your phone is now unlocked like magic. No voided warranty. You can find plenty of these things on eBay in fact this is where I purchased mine.
What you will need is
1. iPhone 3G
2. Clothes Pin or something to open the sim tray
3. Turbosim like device
4. Scotch Tape
5. And finally your carriers SIM card

Open up your iPhone 3G’s sim tray and remove the AT&T sim card it is still inserted. Then you will place very gently (I say very gently because these things are extremely delicate) your turbosim device into the sim tray the same way you would place your sim card. The turbosim and the sim card are shaped in the same manner so you will know which direction to place it. Line up your carriers sim card directly on top of the modified sim device. Now I had some trouble as you can see in the video because the turbosim was slightly bent and would not fit. So I placed one small strip of scotch tape around the bottom of the tray and around the back till it reached the top of the sim. It now smoothly inserts inside the phone. Once inside it will take a moment for it to register but it will eventually register. That’s it your all done. Watch the video to see it in action. Dont update to 2.2 firmware because the older sim proxies dont support it.
I had some difficulties getting the sim to go into the phone because the sim device was slightly bent. So I put some scotch tape on the bottom and wrapped it around the back of the tray and it slipped right in fine.
The meaning this has on cellphone manufacturers in the future actually has great implications. This would force cellphone providers to make their phones unlocked from the beginning. If all people need to do to unlock a phone is get a universal modified sim…well then thats what people will do. People are tired of the cat and mouse game. These greedy phone companies come up with methods to lock not only the phone but people from the freedom of choice. If I want a phone I should be able to buy it. Its not the cell phone providers responsibility to hold me hostage (contract) in order to get a phone.

what sim device are you using, i have tried proxy sim but the phone doesn’t seem to recongnize that anything is in there
I no longer use sim proxies as it is now possible to unlock and jailbreak 3.1.2 firmware.

Great write up. The iPhone is truly revolutionary and I don’t like being without it. This time last year I had jumped in a pool with my iPhone and it was dead. I had to wait 10 days before I was able to get a new one. The phone I had was a cheap go phone. I really love all the apps that can be downloaded to the iPhone.
