The new Tango app for the iPhone and Android market has picked up a lot of attention for being able to do FaceTime quality chat across platforms. Once I heard about it I jumped on the chance to see whether or not it lived up to its name. Setting it up was quite easy, all i needed to input was my first name last name email address and phone number. Simple enough right? All that would need to happen next is that the next person who downloads the app would need to have me on their contacts list. Automagically I would pop up in their contacts and they would pop up in mine. But this is not the case. It does not work like this at all. There are hundreds of people who have yet to begin using the program because no one ever shows up in their contacts. How in the world are people suppose to make a call. I have had four of my friends, two of which have droid phones the other has an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. My droid friends don’t show up in my contacts but I show in theirs. So we tested it and made a few calls. One friend has the Sprint EVO4 and the quality was wonderful. It was clear and the audio was the only problem, it was a bit too low. I needed headphones to hear the conversation better. The other friend has a MyTouch 3G where we had a decent conversation. But I could not initiate the call because they did not show up on my list. Something as trivial as setup should not be such a catastrophe.

Some developers rush to get their apps out to the market that they don’t even fully test it fully. I mean the program only reads the first line from my contacts and skips the other numbers completely. If they have other numbers like home or office numbers they are not read. There also appears to be number formatting issue where it is not read at all if the format is different (xxx)xxx-xxx if there is a 1 in front or a +1 or another country formatting. I am also concerned with how this program accesses my contacts list for phone numbers? Is it uploading it or merely matching it. Why would they need a copy of my friends emails and phone numbers. It should only check to see if that number is on my phone and if it isn’t then it wont add it. Sounds like a simple if statement to me. What a terrible introduction to a product and if apple was in charge it would have just worked. I shouldn’t have to rename all my contacts on my phone to match just for one program it should go the other way around. Now when you are able to chat it does what its suppose to well and video calling over 3G and cross platform is enjoyable bridges the communities together. But good lord why doesn’t it work right.

Update:
It’s confirmed that removing the country code does affect how the contacts are matched. I’ve added and removed the 1 before the area code from a contact which directly reflected in the tango app. (xxx)xxx-xxxx this seems to work. But still does not pick up my droid friends.

If you have been running into some issues updating your custom iOS 4 firmware using pwnage tool in restore mode then there is a simple solution. Instead of putting your phone in DFU mode just do a normal restore directly from itunes while the phone is still on. While holding down the Shift/or Option (Mac) key click restore. This will allow you to search for your custom firmware and restore. Once its complete you will have your phone on the new iOS 4. Remember not to place your phone in DFU mode. Pwnage tool is a tool created only for the mac. But once the firmware is created it can be used on a PC for restoring purposes.

With all the things wrong, or that have been complained about the iPad, the community can most likely be able to fix or come up with work arounds. This can be done by the same people who have come up with solutions for the iphone and ipod touch. It is clear that apple just wanted to make a glorified ebook reader. But in their efforts to do so they ended up making it too powerful to be just this. It wants to be much more. So hopefully Apple can see these complaints and make changes soon. Rival the Kindle DX? Yeah I would rather buy this than that because it does more for almost the same amount of money.

Multitasking.
Backgrounder has been doing this job for a long time now. Now with more battery to play with you can have applications running in the background for longer than before. But less than 10 hours.

Camera.
I’m certain that a camera add on can be made. This can attach to the docking port to allow video conferencing capabilities. We know that Fring was waiting on apple to make a front facing camera. There latest update makes use of the iphone camera. So we know its definitely possible.

Hulu?
The Lack of flash makes this option not possible. Hulu would make this a killer device. Perhaps they do not want the network to be clogged with people streaming video. But face it this is the time we are living in. The demand is needed therefore the business should adjust to it. Not the other way around. What ever happened to supply vs demand. If Hulu re-encodes there video much like youtube has done then im sure this will sell more device. It could be that apple only wishes for people to use their store to buy tv shows. But why buy them when I can just see them for free on my TV or Computer.

BTStack.
This hack made it possible to use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Why not use that instead of an ugly docking station. Keep selling us things that we already own or we can re purpose things we already own in a more useful manner.

What do you think?

In anticipation for the New Years unlocking festivities it is recommended that you definitely jailbrake your iPhone. Here is the reason why. The iphone dev team will be releasing the unlock via cydia. So why not make things easy for your self and get it ready now so all you have to do is install via cydia. It benefits everyone here because there no longer is a need to create separate windows/mac applications. No operating restrictions means easy unlock. But dont jump the gun here please please please dont update to 2.2 firmware because this update will also update your baseband and ruin your chances for software unlocking. I don’t put is past the dev team that they will undoubtedly have an unlock for this baseband sometime in the future. However until then lets get somethings ready that you will need for this upcoming unlock.

I suggest that you use the firmware right beneath 2.2 so use 2.1 so you don’t accidentally update your baseband.

1. iPhone 3G
2. 2.1 apple firmware
3. Quickpwn

If you are on a firmware that is below 2.1 then I recommend updating to at least 2.1 nothing past this. To update open up itunes and hold down shift and browse for the firmware image. If you have an out of the box iphone then put it in DFU mode to update. Once you are on 2.1 simply pwn your phone by using the program quickpwn. Quickpwn will pwn your phone and jailbrake it. You have the option to install cydia installer or make custom boot image. But I like leaving it with default setting and install cydia. That’s it your done and jailbroken on your iPhone 3G so the next step is to wait for new years and the unlock via cydia. This should leave you prepared enough. If I had a mac then I will be able to use pwnage tool and make a how to for you via mac maybe I will invest in one soon. I was lucky that the iphone 3g i purchased was on 2.1 but I has no way of being certain since it was otb. So I blindly jailbroke mine. If you are unsure what firmware you are on because you just purchased it then I wouldn’t recommend doing what I did (Guesstimating) you might end up getting 2.2 if you purchase it today.

When I first unlocked my phone I have never used an iPhone before so I was hesitant on what I should do or how I should go about doing it. Here is a video representation of some information I have gathered over the internet in addition to some simple steps. ***Windows Only***

If you have an iPhone which is already on 1.1.2 and was not purchased out of the box with that firmware then we can proceed with the downgrading process. If you are already have 1.1.1 then you can skip the downgrade procedure and go to jailbreakme.com solution and go to the following step.

Hook up your iPhone to your computer and make sure your computer recognizes it and iTunes can see it. Once you seen your phone in iTunes click on the SHIFT button and hold it then click on restore. A dialog box will pop up for you to browse to the firmware file. locate the firmware named “iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore” and then click open. Get it here. It is now in the process of downgrading your phone don’t touch your phone just let it continue. When its complete you will receive an error message 1015. Don’t panic like I did this is perfectly fine.

This step may not be necessary however your phone may not wake up after the downgrade. To force it to wake up and take you to the activation screen you will need a program called “AppTappInstaller” this is just to wake the phone up.

Once the phone is on the activation screen you will need to enter some information into contacts but in order to get there you have to type *#307# your phone will ring dont worry no one is calling you. When the phone rings delete the number’s you typed and type 0 and answer. The phone will ring again just then place the call on hold. When the phone rings this time decline it and it will take you to where you can enter contact information.

When in contacts enter the following new urls “prefs:” and “jailbreakme.com”.

This next step your going to need to add your wifi settings. So clicking on pref: will take you to your preferences where you can add your wifi information. Also go in and change sleep to NEVER this is important. When that is completed then you can go to the next step.

You will have to enter the code again to get back into the contacts. Just type 0 answer hold and then decline. This time you will click on jailbreakme.com which will connect you to the internet so you can exploit your phone. When you do this it will kick you back the the activation screen and and automatically boot your phone.

Now this may not happen with you but it sure happened to me. The phone would not reboot on its own. So I had to keep trying till i got it. To save you some time here is what I did to kick start the exploit in to working. Plugging the iPhone into a power source or a different computer made it go. If that doesnt work somehow by putting the iphone in landscape mode in safari did the trick.

Now that the phone is Jailbroken you should see installer.app on your phone. Go ahead and launch installer.app and browse to network where you will find OpenSSH. Go ahead and install that. Next you will install anySIM1.2.1u

You will need to connect to you iphone and transfer the anysim manually. Use WinSCP or any FTP program you prefer. Check to see what your iphone IP address is. You can see under settings, general, wifi, just click the blue arrow near your network. One you have the ip address which is your user name you will need the password which is “alpine”. Now take the anySIM1.2u file and extract the folder and rename the folder to anySIM.app. upload this to your iphone’s applications folder. Once its uploaded go onto the folder and find the file named anySIM right click on it and change the file permissions to 0755 this will allow read write execute on this file.

Almost done. Lets restart your phone you should now see the anySIM file. Go ahead and change your sim to the other carrier. Launch the program and let it begin its thing. Great now that its complete lets move on.

In installer.app lets go to tweaks 1.1.1 and then to oktoprep. This will allow us to install 1.1.2 from iTunes. Your phone wont show unlocked yet until we upgrade. Connect your phone to iTunes and make sure it reads it. You will need to download 1.1.2 here. In iTunes hold SHIFT and upgrade then browse to the file named iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.

Lastly we will jailbrake your fresh new 1.1.2 and be done. Grab the file here. click on the windows file check install ssh then jailbreak and let it do its thing. Your phone will restart a few times and thats it all done. I personally will stay at this fimware for a while till 1.1.3 official apps begin to come out. Also because the BSD Subsystem kills my battery.
