5 Useful iPhone apps

On the eve of official first party applications for the iphone approaching I thought it would be nice to take a look back a retrospective if you will at all the third party jailbroken applications. Why would I do this, well hopefully developers wont forget what the scene actually wants on their phones. The iphone scene is an intelligent community and hopefully devs will learn from us and develop things we will actually want to use. So on that note lets round up some of the more useful third party jailbroken iphone applications. These would be apps that prove to be the most functional.

1. weDict – Have you ever needed to look up a word and did not have a dictionary at hand. Well how helpful is it to have one on your phone. I use this application often and it has proven its usefulness on many occasions. Once you download the weDict app on your phone you can then load it with many different types of dictionaries and thesauruses.

2. Converter – The converter app is also extremely useful in so many ways. I often use it to convert currency and see just how awful the american dollar is compared to our european friends. But it has so many other uses. It can convert just about anything from angles to acceleration to clothing sizes to help you with your physics and chemistry. Its good when you run in to someone who does not use the imperial system as we americans do.

3. iFlickr – If you are a flickr user you already know how handy this application can be. All you need to do is take a picture and you can send it directly to your flickr account from your iphone. No computer necessary. This can save you a lot of time and hassle.

4. SIMport – A free application that will take contacts from your sim card and add them to your iPhone. Because most people i know do not save their contacts to outlook they save them to the sim card because its quick and easy. Well once you got your new iphone you had to either sit in front of your computer and reorganize your whole contacts list so that it was compatible with the iphone. This takes up so much time and and shouldn’t have been necessary and not its not anymore because of this app.

5. Books – An ebook reader application for the iPhone. They have some books already for download on installer.app but you can create your own. If you have ebooks in chm format which is compressed html you can extract the chm and upload the folder with your html files to the media folder for books.

I wish that I could say there was a good native chat application but alas there is none. I suppose we will just have to wait for an official chat app to come around because apollo just doesn’t cut it for me. I chose applications that I feel people can use on a daily basis sorry if your favorite got cut from the list, but I was going for more functionality then anything else. If you have one you feel should have been added feel free say in the comments.

Honorable Mention – Services, Finder, Screenshot.
